2. A scientist wants to turn a mitotic behaving cell into a meiosis behaving cell. How would they make that occur?
2. Mitosis occurs in all somatic cells of the body. Where as meiosis occurs only in reproductive cells at the time of gamete formation. For a cell to under go meiosis , it has to diploid cell. A haploid cell can't under go meiosis.
Cell cycle is highly regulated and genetically controlled process. Mitosis is controlled by certain set of genes and meiosis is controlled by certain set of genes. So what genes are active in a cell decides the type of cell division a cell under goes. The activated genes inturn produce certain proteins. These proteins act as enzymes which bring various chemical reactions with in the cell . These chemical reactions will further build certain molecules deciding the type of division. It is a highly regulated event in the cells with lot of check points at each stage in the cell cycle.
So activating the genes involved in the division is the way to convert a cell that is dividing by mitosis in to a cell which divides by meiosis.
