How can an organism have altered phenotype without ant mutation?

How can an organism have altered phenotype without ant mutation?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer:-

Without any mutation the phenotype can only be changed due to environmental conditions.
Environmental conditions can alter the phenotype of an individual. If an individual is kept in a condition for long term, the individual will adopt the condition and it will show its phenotypes according to the condition.
It will not show its phenotype according to its birth place.

E.g : ALASKAN MALAMUTE is a dog of cold region. It has long hair. This long hair is its phenotype. If this dog is kept in warm region like India or Bangladesh from birth with some careful observation it will survive, but the long hair will be less long or less in number. This long hair is for protecting the body from cold, but in warm region it is not needed. Here environmental conditions changed the phenotype.
That's how environmental conditions can alter phenotype.

You discover an organism with a new mutation in the gene that you are studying that changes the codon in the mRNA from a GCC (Ala) to a GAC (Asp) causing a mutant phenotype. You feed this organism a mutagen and find that in one of its progeny the phenotype has now reverted back to wild-type. When you look at your gene in this offspring you find the mutation GAC (Asp) has been changed back to the original GCC (Ala)....
