With respect to functional anatomy, which of the following statements is false?
a) the volume of the conducting airways is about 150 ml
b) the volume of the lungs at the end of tidal expiration is about 2500 mls
c) the terminal bronchioles have alveoli in their walls
d) in the respiratory bronchioles, air moves in a laminar fashion
e) type I alveolar cells comprise most the alveolar epithelial membrane
FALSE STATEMENTS
C) The terminal bronchioles have alveoli in their walls.
EXPLANATION
The conducting Airway comprises of area from the nose to the terminal bronchioles here there will not be any exchange of gases. The volume of air in this area is called dead space volume and it is about 150 ml.
Tidal expiration means normal expiration. That is which a person does not put any forceful efforts for expiration. The volume of air remain in lungs after a tidal respiration is called functional residual capacity. It is the sum of expiratory reserve volume and residual volume. Its average value is about 2500 ml.
The terminal bronchioles does not contain alveoli in their walls. The alveoli are present in walls of respiratory bronchioles.
During normal breathing, laminar flow occurs in medium sized and small sized airways. Thus laminar flow occurs in the bronchi and bronchioles in normal breathing. So in respiratory bronchioles, air moves in laminar flow.
Type 1 alveolar cells comprises about 95% of alveolar epithelial surface. They are squamous cells and are involved in gaseous exchange.
