You weigh a 25.00 g sample of a solid and put it into a graduated cylinder. You then fill the graduated cylinder to 50.00 ml with benzene (D= 0.880g/cm3), after re weighing, you find that the mass of the solid and benzene together is 58.80 g. Assuming that the solid is insoluble in benzene, what is the density of the solid?
initial volume of benzene = 50.00 mL
density of benzene = 0.880 g / cm^3
mass of solid and benzene = 58.80 g
mass of benzene = 58.70 - 25 = 33.7 g
density = mass / volume
volume = mass / density
= 33.7 / 0.880
= 38.30 mL
volume of solid displaced = 50-38.30 = 11.70 mL
density of the solid = mass / volume
= 25.00 / 11.70
= 2.14 g / cm^3
density of the solid = 2.14 g / cm^3
