Describe the effect of elevated levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine on the following

-Immune system

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • Epinephrine (Adrenaline) and Norepinephrine (Noradrenaline), both are neurotransmitters and also serves as hormones. They influence different parts of body and stimulates central nervous system (CNS). Having too much or too little of these hormones can have effects on our immune system.
  • Epinephrine shows more effect on heart while norepinephrine shows more effect on blood vessels. Both of these hormones plays major role in fight-or-flight response to stress in human body.
  • Elevated levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine shows their effects on immune system by causing:

--> High blood pressure

--> Anxiety

--> Excessive sweating

--> Heart palpitations (abnormal heart beat)

--> Headache

  • Elevated levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine can be due to obesity, pheochromocytoma (tumor in adrenal glands) or paranganglioma (tumor outside adrenal glands).
  • Stress can also cause elevated levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine.
