2- Please describe the nine regions of the abdomen.
Abdomen is divided into nine regions:
>> Upper: Right Hypochondriac, Epigastric, Left Hypochondriac
hypo” means below, and “chondriac” means cartilage, the cartilage of the ribs. Hypochondriac means the abdominal region under the ribs.
Epigastric means the region above the stomach. (Epi = above, gastric = stomach)
> Organs in the Abdominal Regions:
Right Hypochondriac Region: liver, gallbladder, right kidney, and portions of the small and large intestine.
Epigastric Region: Portions of the liver, as well as the stomach, pancreas, duodenum, spleen, and adrenal glands.
Left Hypochondriac Region: Spleen, large/small intestines, left kidney, pancreas, stomach, and tip of the liver.

>> Middle: Right lumbar, umbilical, left lumbar
Lumbar region means the region nearest to the lumbar vertebrae.
Umbilical Region means the region that contains the umbilicus.
> Organs in the Abdominal Regions:
Right Lumbar Region: Ascending colon, small intestine, and right kidney.
Umbilical Region: Duodenum, the small intestine, as well as the transverse colon.
Left Lumbar Region: Portion of the descending colon, small intestine, and left kidney.

>> Below: Right iliac, Hypogastric, Left iliac.
Iliac Region means the region nearest to the iliac crest, top of the hip bone.
Hypogastric Region means the region below the stomach. (Hypo= below, gastric= stomach)
> Organs in the Abdominal Regions:
Right Iliac Region: Appendix, cecum, ascending colon, and small intestine.
Hypogastric Region: Urinary bladder, portions of the sigmoid colon, small intestine, and reproductive organs.
Left Iliac Region: Portion of the sigmoid colon, descending colon, and small intestine.
