If the tip clearance is 0.2 in and centrifugal forces induce an average longitudinal stress of 10 ksi. After how many hours is expected the blade to interfere with the turbine stator due to creep?

Given that the working temperature = 1400oF

The Tensile modulous of INCOLOY alloy 800 at the given temperature is given in below table.

Modulous = 21.06 x103 ksi

Stress / Strain = 21.06 x103 ksi

Longitudinal stress = 10 ksi

Strain = Stress / 21.06 x103 = 10/ 21.06 x103. =0.000475 inches per second

Given that the diameter is 18 inches

Gap is 0.2 inches

Centrifugal force acts both side we have to consider radial growth only

time to fill the gap = 0.2/ 0.000475 = 421.2 seconds= 7.02 min = 0.117 hours
