What makes a dependent samples t test different from a one-sample t test? In what way are these tests similar?
Definitions :
1. One sample t-test is a statistical test used to determine whether there is a significant difference between the means of two independent samples.
2. Dependent or paired t-test is a statistical test used to determine if there is a significant difference between the means of dependent samples.
The key differences between Dependent sample t-test and one sample t-test are :
1. A paired t-test is designed to compare the means of the same group or item under two separate scenarios. An unpaired one sample t-test compares the means of two independent or unrelated groups.
2. In an unpaired one sample t-test,the variance between groups is assumed to be equal, whereas in a paired t- test, the variance is not assumed to be equal.
3. The test statistic in one sample t-test follows a t distribution with degrees of freedom n1 + n2 - 2, where n1 and n2 are the sizes of the first and the second samples respectively. The test statistic in paired t-test follows a t distribution with degrees of freedom n-1, where n is the common size of both samples provided.
The two tests are similar with respect to their test statistics, since both the tests use a test statistic which follows a t distribution.
