Green Revolution

The revolution which led to increase in cereal and grains production in several countries during the 20th century is called Green Revolution. It was also known as the agricultural revolution. Various technology improvements were made in order to make it happen including HYV (high-yielding variety) seeds.

Following interests drove the happening of Green Revolution (mainly in developing countries):

  1. To be less dependent on Imports-

Every developing country including India wanted to achieve self sufficiency. The reliance on imports was leading deficits in the exchange. The green revolution came so that the country would become self sufficient and produce more domestically.

  1. To increase Employment-

Most of the people were unemployed. They needed jobs and the countries wanted to increase their GDP. More employment means greater GDP. Thus, the green revolution that came made the production activity faster and that required a lot of people to work on it. Thus the employment was successfully improved.

  1. To make the yield per acre Increase-

The lands were not productive before green Revolution happened. New technologies and machineries were required to increase the yield of the land. Green revolution was the one thing that contributed greatly in this part.

Overall, we can say that Green revolution came for the welfare of the developing economies such as India, Africa etc.
