Health researchers believe that the neonatal mortality rate is higher at home (MRH) than that in the health centers (MRC). The neonatal mortality rates (both MRH and MRC) for 20 countries are recorded in SSPS file Ass_2Q2.sav.

  1. Do the data support researchers’ beliefs? Use α=0.05.
  2. Find a 95% confidence interval to investigate the researchers’ belief and explain its meaning.
  3. Check the assumptions of the above procedure.

Solutions

Expert Solution

using SPSS we have following output

  1. p-value from independent sample t-test is 0.000 which is less than 0.05 so we conclude that the neonatal mortality rate is higher at home (MRH) than that in the health centers (MRC).
  2. 95% confidence interval is (2.5659,5.26744) since confidence interval so not contain only positive numbers so,we conclude that the neonatal mortality rate is higher at home (MRH) than that in the health centers (MRC).
  3. from boxplot we can see the observations are approximately normal and observations are given independent so assumptions are met

Researchers believe that a higher percentage of males are afflicted with cysturina than females. Suppose of the 50 individuals, 15 were females and the remainder were males. Using 99% confidence, estimate the proportion of females with cysturina. Then estimate the proportion of females afflicted with cysturina at 96% confidence.

The cost of health care is increasing at a rate higher than inflation. One popular suggestion by policy makers to lower the rate of this cost increase is to (i) rely more heavily on nurse practitioners instead of primary care doctors for certain medical treatments and (ii) to lower the average time patients stay in the hospital and to take care of them at home as soon as possible (in medical lingo this is substituting "outpatient care" for "inpatient care")....

Pre-term birth is a common cause of neonatal mortality, especially in low-income and middle-income countries. A large randomized study was conducted across six countries with high rates of pre-term birth to investigate the effectiveness of taking daily low-dose aspirin for reducing the risk of giving birth before 37 weeks. The 5,780 women randomized to the treatment group received a daily 81 milligram aspirin tablet at the start of the third trimester, while the 5,764 women randomized to the control group...

No calculations are necessary in this section.

A politician wants to cut a rural health initiative because the mortality rate of rural residents (13.75 per 1000) is lower than the mortality rate among city dwellers (20.77 per 1000). Observe the age-specific rates for each population and comment if he is justified in cutting spending based on crude rates. *Age-specific rates: An age-specific rate is calculated in the same manner as the crude rate except that both the number of events and the mid-year population are restricted to...

The unemployment rate of persons with a disability is typically higher than for those with no disability. Recent statistics report that this rate is 13.4%. An advocacy group in a large city located in the southeastern region of the U.S. selected a random sample of 250 persons with a disability. What is the probability that no more than 25 persons in this sample are unemployed? (Round to four decimal places.)
