What are the two types of visionary leadership? Describe their similarities and differences? Which type of leader tends to be more ethical and why? Be sure to thoroughly explain your answer and provide examples.
The two types of visionary leadership are transformational leadership and charismatic leadership.
Transformational leader creates an innovative vision and his further actions are driven by that vision and motivates to their followers. The transformational leadership is an innovative, accomplished and possesses great personality and personal appeal. They have high energy level and extremely committed to their vision and have high risk taking abilities. There are many examples of a transformational leader like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and Nelson Mandela etc.
A charismatic leader is a powerful personality with high level of self-confidence, strong believes in their ideas. The charismatic leaders have great influential and motivational power and articulate their ideas in very effective manner to their followers. They are ready to take certain degree of risk and try to empower their followers. Example of charismatic leadership is Adolf Hitler.
The similarities between transformational leadership and charismatic leadership are that both are visionary and innovative in their approaches.
The differences between transformational leadership and charismatic leadership are that transformational leaderships are more democratic in their approach and don’t impose their vision on their followers while charismatic leadership sometime tries to dictate their followers.
Transformational Leader tends to be more ethical because of their democratic way of functioning. Transformational Leadership is good for the organizations when they are looking for a big change in the process or higher goals to achieve in shorter span of time or a complete makeover of the organizations. Charismatic leader are beneficial for the work that could be linked to the ideological values of the followers and have an appeal for them. For example if technological advancement or defense related work could be linked to the national pride or development of the nation etc. then in this situation a charismatic leaders are most likely to be beneficial to influence or motivate their followers.
