Two parts of a machine are held together by eight equally-spaced M6x1.0 grade 5.8 bolts that are unifomly tightened to provide a total inital clamping force of 44 kN. Each bolt has a proof stress of 380 MPa, and a threaded area of 20.1 mm^2. The elasticities are such that the member stiffness is four times as high as the member stiffness.

b) You have determined that assembly procedure can reliably set the initial clamping force to within plus or minus 20% of the nominal value. What do you recommend as a safe working load if you require a factor of safety of 2.5 against any failures?

Two sections of a pressure vessel are to be held together by 5/8 in-11 UNC grade 5 bolts. You are told that the length of the bolts is 1.5 in, the length of the threaded portion of the bolts is 0.75 in, and that their elastic modulus is E=30 Mpsi. The total load on the joint is 36 kip and the stiffness of the members is given as km=8.95 Mlbf/in. What is the minimum number of bolts that should be...

Two equally charged particles, held 3.0 × 10-3 m apart, are released from rest. The initial acceleration of the first particle is observed to be 8.5 m/s2 and that of the second to be 12 m/s2. If the mass of the first particle is 8.7 × 10-7 kg, what are (a) the mass of the second particle and (b) the magnitude of the charge of each particle?

A thin rod consists of two parts joined together. One-fourth of it is silver and three-fourths is gold. The temperature decreases by 22 C°. ΔL/(L0,Silver + L0,Gold) Determine the fractional decrease in the rod's length using the formula above, where L0,Silver and L0,Gold are the initial lengths of the silver and gold rods.

The standard deviation for parts from two machines are known to be .03 mm. Machine A produced a random sample of 40 parts with a mean size of 16.8 mm. Machine B produced a random sample of 42 parts with a mean size of 17.0 mm. Does this show, at 90% confidence, that the machines have different average sizes? Be sure to state the interval. I am 90% confident that the difference in the average sizes of parts from the...

Vines Ltd produces custom machine parts on a job order basis. The company has two direct product cost categories: direct materials and direct labour. In the past, indirect manufacturing costs were allocated to products using a single indirect cost pool, allocated based on direct labour hours. The indirect cost rate was $115 per direct labour hour. The managers of Vines Ltd decided to switch from a manual system to software programs that release materials and signal machines when to begin...
