Honesty is practicing all the moral values and. Wing truthful to oneself and to others while integrity comes out of honesty which means not to get dissolved under any circumstances of dishonesty.
Why are these virtues important in a professional context?
One of the challenges the society face today is white collar crime which is committed by professionals in various organizations. White collar crime refers to the psychological or moral corruption. So, when someone works in a professional environment, they might need to be strong enough to overcome immoral and dishonest proposals both in terms of products and services.
In what ways do they represent excellence in character?
They could offer products and services that won't harm the common man. They could avoid getting bribes and giving bribe in receiving personal gain. They could treat people equally. They could openly inform the public about whatever risks involved in a product or services. They could remain loyal to their employer by not disclosing any important details of the company they serve.
what ways are engineers professionally obligated to cultivate these virtues?
Engineers are bound to be ethical by practicing honesty and integrity as they will be the ones who will be developing products that would either benefit or affect the common people in a number of ways.
First and foremost, they shouldn't manufacture or accept to manufacture products that are ethically unacceptable. They shouldn't sell essential products for unaffordable price. They need to be honest with their employer in revealing all the information. They shouldn't bribe anyone to get things done in their favour. They shouldn't receive favour from anyone to sell company's secrets.
