In September 2008, at the age of 35, Haile Gebrselassie, won the Berlin Marathon with a world record time of 2:03:59, breaking his own world record by 27 seconds (twenty-six 4 minute and 45 second miles). The record stood for three years. Since he was over the age of 35, that mark stood as the Masters Age group world record until September of 2019. Though he is considered one of the great distance runners of all time, he cannot run a 4-minute mile! He could not at age 35 either, so age is not the issue.

Describe at least two physiologic reasons why he is unable to do this

Solutions

Expert Solution

The physiological reasons are as follows which makes the run harder -

1.Insufficient muscle recruitment -

It occurs due to high demand of oxygen in muscle and spikes the oxygen amount in muscle but it takes time to respond by other part of body by oxygen kinetics. The oxygen deficit stimlates the signal causes heart rate and breathing high to dilate the blood vessels to reach to the muscles. The oxygen consumption drifts upward and causes shift to recruitment of less efficient muscle fibre causes more fatigue in less time.

2.Metabolite accumulation in the muscle

By the excessive running at some points of aerobic energy system oxygen delivered by heart and lung can't supply enough energy to the muscles and therefore shift to the anerobic enery sources which provides the fuel to the muscles but as a result it also generate the lots of metabolites as a by product and accumulates in muscles. The metabolite accumulation i.e lactate in the muscle stimulates the distress signals travels down to spinal cord causes uncomfotable painful run.
