a) Give at least three reasons why enzymes are essential for the operation of metabolic pathways.
b) Why might different tissues express different isozymes?
a :
- Enzymes act as catalysts, which enhances the rate of reaction by at least 10,00000 times as compared to a non catalyzed reaction
-Enzymes are the selective catalyst, being specific to the type of reaction catalysed and also to a single substrate or to a group of closely related substrates
-Many enzymes have a small nonprotein molecule or metal ion termed as prosthetic groups, cofactors and coenzyme that help improving the catalytic property
-Enzyme activity can be regulated so that the organism can respond appropriately to the changes in internal and external environments
b :
Isoenzymes are different physical versions of the same enzyme seen in different tissues.
They differ in substrate specificity and also sensitivity to regulatory factors.
This help them to adjust to different tissues and helps in fine tuning of metabolism
