. Give the concentration of the following in terms of Molarity.

          a. The molarity of hydroxide ions in a 4.25M solution of barium hydroxide.

          b. The molarity of sodium ions in a 11.5M sodium phosphate solution.

Solutions

Expert Solution

a) Here we are dissolving Ba(OH)2 ,then finding out concentration of hydroxide ion in the aqueous solution.

  • Dissolution of Barium hydroxide in water or write down balanced dissolution equation.

             Ba(OH)2   +    H2O        Ba2+     +      2 OH-

  •     Use the coefficient from this equation to calculate concentration of the individual ions in aqueous solution.

Molarity of Hydroxide ion (OH-) :-

So molarity of OH- ion in 4.25 M solution of Ba(OH)2 solution is 8.5 M .

b) Sodium phosphate are salt of sodium (Na+) and phosphate(PO43-) , some examples are:-

Here I am calculating concentration of sodium in sodium dihydrogen sulphate (NaH2PO4).

  • Dissolution of sodium phosphate in water or write down balanced dissolution equation.

             NaH2PO4 +    H2O        Na+     +      H2PO-4

  •     Use the coefficient from this equation to calculate concentration of the individual ions in aqueous solution.

Molarity of sodium ion (Na+) :-

So molarity of Na+ ion in 11.5 M solution of NaH2PO4 solution is 11.5M .Similarly you can calculate sonium ion concentration in other sodium phosphate by considering 2 or 3 mol of sodium ion.

Chemists often use molarity M, in moles/liter, to measure the concentration of solutions. Molarity is a common unit of concentration because the volume of a liquid is very easy to measure. However, the drawback of using molarity is that volume is a temperature-dependent quantity. As temperature changes, density changes, which affects volume. Volume markings for most laboratory glassware are calibrated for room temperature, about 20?C. Fortunately, there are several other ways of expressing concentration that do not involve volume and...

Molarity is the concentration of chemical solutions. It is the number of moles of solute dissolved in a liter of solution. It is denoted by M, and the unit is moles per liter, which can be written as molL. molarity of a solution= moles of soluteliters of solution Molality of a solution is the amount of solute divided by the mass of the solvent (not the mass of the solution). It is also defined as the number of moles of...

1.Define the terms hypotonic and hypertonic. If I were to give you the salt concentration, for example, inside a cell versus outside a cell, be able to state whether the solution outside the cell is hypotonic or hypertonic to the cell. Also, what is isotonic? 2. Explain turgor, and how this term applies to wilting (think of how a cut flower will wilt out of water) 3. Question about turgor and osmosis – think of a leftover salad.
