Right atrial pressures are obtained in order to assess?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Right atrial pressures are obtained inorder to assess

the stretch of the right ventricle, which in turn determines the output of the heart, which in turn determines the outputs of the left heart. The output of the left heart is the cardiac output

Right atrial pressure is the blood pressure in the right atrium of the heart . RAP is often nearly identical to central venous pressure , although the two terms are not identical, as a pressure differential can sometimes exist between the venae cavae and the right atrium

Factors affecting RAP

Factors that increase RAP include

  • Hypervolemia
  • Forced exhalation
  • Tension pneumothorax
  • Heart failure
  • Pleural effusion
  • Decreased cardiac output
  • Cardiac tamponade
  • Mechanical ventilation and the application of positive end expiratory pressure
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Pulmonary embolism

Factors that decrease RAP include

  • Hypovolemia
  • Deep inhalation
  • Distributive shock
