3. In the information below: two variables are defined, a regression equation is given, and one data point is given.
Variable: Weight = Maximum weight capable of bench pressing (pounds)
Variable: Training = Number of hours spent lifting weights a week
Regression: Weight= 95 + 11.7(Training)
Data point: An individual who trains 5 hours a week and can bench 152 pounds
Give the value of the slope and
interpret the value of the slope in context.
Clearly label answer below.
Give the value of the y-intercept and interpret the value of the intercept in context. If the intercept makes no sense in this context, briefly explain why or why not. Clearly label answer below.
Answer a)
The regression equation is given as:
Weight= 95 + 11.7(Training)
The slope of regression equation is equal to the coefficient of independent variable. In this case, training is the independent variable, so the value of slope is 11.7.
Interpretation
The value of slope indicates that increase in the number of hours spent lifting weights by one hour per week, increase the maximum weight bench pressing capability by 11.7 pounds on average.
Answer b)
The value of y-intercept is equal to value of dependent variable when independent variable is zero. In this case weight is the dependent variable while training is the independent variable. So y-intercept is 95 pounds which is the value of weight when training is zero.
Interpretation
The value of y-intercept indicates that if the person does not spend any time lifting weights, he/she has the maximum weight bench pressing capability of 95 pounds on average.
