If a student loses magnesium oxide ash during the heating process, what effect will that have on the calculated ratio of magnesium to oxygen?
Answer: If there is loss in magnisium oxide ash during heating process there must be decrease in the ratio of magnesium to oxygen.
The ratio of Magnesium to oxide when no loss if there is should be close to 1:1.
Viz. mass of Magnisium= 2.39g
mass of Magnisium oxide= 3.78g
mass of oxygen= 1.39g
Number of moles of Magnisium= 2.39/24= 0.0995
Number of moles of oxygen= 1.39/16= 0.0868
According to this calculation, this gives Approximately 1:1 ratio of Mg: O.
While in case of loss of magnisium oxide ash during heating causes change in the moles ratio of Mg to O and results in the decrease of ratio due to loss in ash.
