A downward force of 3.7N is exerted on a -5.4μC charge. (a) What is the magnitude of the electric field at this point? (b) What is the direction of the electric field at this point?
SOLUTION
Force F on a charge q in an electric field E is given by,
F=q*E
If q is +ve F is in the direction of E.
If q is -ve F is in the opposite direction of E.
Here,
a) magnitude of the electric field, E = F/q = 3.7/(5.4*10-6) = 6.85*105 N/C
b) direction of the electric field at this point is opposite to that of force i.e upward.
