Expert Solution

Psychologists classifies problems into:

1) Ill-defined problems: Problems which do not have clear goals or expected solution.

2) Well-defined problems: Problems which have a clearly defined solution.

To determine whether a problem is complex or simple, we have to understand whether the problem has a simple, clear solution or not. Where baking a cake coul be the example of simple problem, where you have clearly defined solution i.e the reciep, climbing a mountain will be complex problem where the path isn't clearly defined.

Few examples of problems are as follows:

1) I have an exam approaching and am extremely nervous.

The problem can be said a simple one as the clearly defined solution is to study and prepare for the exam. It is definitely in my control and the people who can be involved could me my teachers.

Another solution is to join a class.

2) I've had a break up.

This could be a complex problem as the situation wasn't in my control, there is no clearly defined solution. I may however seek help of friends, well wishers to overcome from my break up.

Another solution is to join a hobby class.

3) I have a interview and don't know how a resume should be.

It's a simple problem as it has clear solution. It is definitely in my control, I may need help from my elder brother or father to guide me though.

Another solution is to Google .

4) I have too cook as there's nobody at home.

Again a simple problem with clear solution. I may involve a maid in this problem. The solution maybe to watch a video and follow the recipe to cook something, or order food!

5) There is no electricity and a project has to completed.

A complex problem as there is no clear solution. It's not in my control.

However, I can check with my friend and go to his/her place if there's electricity at their place. Or I can just wait.

6) My parents are planning a divorce.

A complex problem. I may get my family members involved in it. The solution is to try and talk to them, another solution is to talk to a counselor maybe.

7) I just discovered that I'm pregnant and I'm unmarried.

A complex problem, I would involve my trusted friend or my boyfriend. The solution is to either get married and keep the child,or abortion.

8) Confused about slelecting a career.

Simple problem, I would get my teachers, guides, counselors involved. Solution is to decide on basis of marks and interests. Or maybe by aptitude tests.

9) Can't find motivation to work.

Complex problem, would involve my seniors. Solution is to talk it out or to set new goals.

10) Laptop not working.

Simple problem, the engineer needs to be involved. Solution is to take the laptop to a repair shop, or try on your own simple techniques like cleaning,re starting it etc.
