1) Holistic nursing is officially defined and clearly
explicated by the American Holistic Nurses
Association. The recognition of holistic nursing, its
contributions to the well-being of society, and its
credibility in offering viable evidence-based
approaches to improving health are well docu-
mented.

Holistic nurses focus on treating patients as whole beings instead of treating specific symptoms. Sometimes referred to as complementary health nurses, they take a mind-body-spirit-emotion approach to nursing, incorporating alternative forms of medicine along with Western medicine.

2) Holistic nursing combines standard nursing interventions with various modalities that are focused on treating the patient in totality. Alternative therapies can include stress management, aroma therapy, and therapeutic touch. The combination of interventions allows the patient to heal in mind, body, and spirit by focusing on the patient's emotions, spirituality, and cultural identity as much as the illness. The six steps of the holistic caring process occur simultaneously, including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes, therapeutic plan of care, implementation, and evaluation. The holistic assessment of the patient can include spiritual, transpersonal, and energy-field assessments in combination with the standard physical and emotional assessments.

3) The current Standards of Holistic Nursing are based on five Core Values of practice: 1) Holistic Philosophy and Education; 2) Holistic Ethics, Theories, and Research; 3) Holistic Nurse Self-Care; 4) Holistic Communication, Therapeutic Environment and Cultural Competence; and 5) Holistic Caring Process

Holistic Interventions:

Mind-Body Interventions include behavioral, psychological, social, and spiritual approaches. Examples are cancer support groups and relaxation classes. Biologically-Based Therapies use plant or other biological materials. Examples include herbal medicines and aromatherapy.

There are five main aspects of personal health in Holistic : physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual.
