  1. If the cell has sufficient energy and does not need to run the CAC for energy, what other biomolecules could be synthesized if the following CAC intermediates accumulated?
    1. High levels of Succinyl-CoA
    2. High levels of Acetyl-CoA
    3. High levels of oxaloacetate.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The accumulated molecules will be used for the synthesis of molecules for which the accumulated molecules are precursors.

Succinyl CoA threonine, isoleucine, methionine, valine
Acetyl CoA tyrosine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, threonine, isoleucine, lysine, leucine
Oxaloacetate asparate, aspraragine

Citric acid cycle is an important process of aerobic respiration. It takes place in mitochondrial matrix. It is the step in aerobic respiration with yields the maximum number of ATP molecules by oxidative phosphorylation. Therefore if the cell is having high number of ATP molecules, then this cycle will not take place. Instead, the intermediates of this cycle will be used for the synthesis of other molecules which are listed in the table.

Every cell in the body requires oxygen for respiration so that sufficient energy can be produced. Carbon dioxide, a waste product, is also produced and needs to be removed. Therefore, the levels of both gases must be regulated. How does this explain the changes in your pulse rate?
