What are Fixed side and Floating side bearing arrangement? Explain their applications with sketches.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Bearing Arrangements:

Basically for a shaft to be supported we need to balance it with two supports. Thus two bearings are required for supporting a shaft system. Depending on the conditions and the requirements different types of bearing arrangements are used.

1) Fixed side bearing arrangement:

This type of bearing arrangement helps in the movement of the shaft along with the housing. This arrangement restricts the movement of the shaft w.r.t. to the housing, as the bearing is rigidly fixed to the housing.

2) Floating side bearing arrangement:

This arrangement is usually in combination with the fixed side bearing arrangement. In this arrangement the bearing is not restricted with the housing, instead clearance is provided to allow play in the shaft (axially). It can compensate for the stresses caused due to expansion or temperature fluctuations or any other criteria.
