In polymer chemistry,
Explain why phenylene sulfone and ether groups are great in resisting aqueous hydrolisis and chemical resistance.
Polymers with sulfone and ether groups are resistant to hydrolysis and also has high chemical reistance.
The phenylene sulfone group has both sulfone group and phenylene rings. The sulfone group in the polymer will attract electrons from the neighbouring phenyl rings and thus causes a electron deficiency. Hence the polymer will resistant electron loss through oxidations and are hence oxidation resistant. Moreover the system is highly resonance stabilised and are highly resistant toother chemical reactions. This attributes for the high chemical resistance of these polymers.
The ether group in these polymers makes it hydrolysis resitant also.
As a result these polymers are hydrolysis and chemical resistant.
