Using the MO diagrams, predict the bond order for the stronger bond in each pair:

(a) B2 or B2+

(b) F2 or F2+

(c) O2 or O22+

(d) C2+ or C2

Solutions

Expert Solution

The bond order is referred to as the number of chemical bonds between individual atoms . The more the number of bonds , stronger is the bond .

The bond order of molecules can be determined using MO diagrams , using the formula :

BO = [ No. of electrons in antibonding orbitals - No. of electrons in bonding orbitals ] / 2

a) The bond order of B2 is 1 , and that of B2+ is 1/2 , so the stronger bond is of B2 with BO 1.

b) The bond order of F2 is 1 , and that of F2+ is 1.5 . SO the stronger bond is of F2+.

c) The bond order of O2 is 2 and that of O2 2+ is 2.5 , so the stronger bond is of O2 2+

d) The bond order od C2+ is 1.5 and that of C2- is 2.5 , so the stronger bond is of C2-.
