The Pledge to Eliminate Poverty
One of the intended outcomes of the Millennium Development Goals was to “eradicate extreme poverty and hunger” (1) in the world. How successful has the achievement of this outcome been to its mission to “meet the needs of the world’s poorest” (1)?

What are Millennium Development Goals :-
They were 8 international development goals that has been established at the Millennium Summit of the United Nations in 2000, following an adoption of UN Millennium Declaration .Following are the goals that were set :-
1) Eradicate extreme poverty and Hunger.
2) Achieve Universal Primary Education.
3) Promote Gender Equality and Empowering Women
4) Reduction of child mortality.
5) Improve Maternal Health
6) Combat HIV /AIDS , malaria and other diseases.
7) Ensure Environmental Sustainability.
8) Develop a Global Partnership for Development.
MDG -Success or failure :-
It has been a mixed bag of Success and Failures both which are as follows :-
Success of the goals :-
1) Globally people living under extreme poverty has fallen from 1.9 billion to 836 million.
2) The number of undernourished people has fallen from 23.3% to 12.9%.
3) The primary school enrollments have reached upto 91% in developing countries
4) Initially 74 girls for every 100 boys were enrolled for primary education which has now changed to 103 girls for every 100 boys .
5)The mortality rate has declined by more than half .
6) The Maternal Mortality ratio has been cut nearly in half .
7) The global malaria incidence rate is fallen by 37%.
8) 2.6 billion people gained access to drinking water .
9) 2.1 billion people have gained access to improved sanitation.
10) Official development assistance from wealthy to developing countries increased by 66%.
Failures of the goals :-
1) These successes were not experienced equally over the globe .
2) Sub Saharan Africa has lacked behind not even achieving maternal mortality reduction for even one country.
3) Women continue to face discrimination in access to work , economic asset and participation in private and public decision making .
4) More than 800 million people continue to live in poverty.
5) The proportion of out of school children increased from 30 to 36 %
6) The numbers of emission from carbon dioxide and water scarcity has increased.
Future of Millennium Development Goals :-
These Millennium Development Goals will be converted into Sustainable Development Goals in the next summit.
