In this problem we will use a slater determinant to examine a proposed electronic configuration for Lithium 1s3

a) Draw an orbital diagram showing two possible ways to achieve this configuration

b)using the diagram, write the Slater Determinant for this electronic configuration

Solutions

Expert Solution

Electronic configuration of Li

a) orbital diagram

Ist method : 1s2 2s1

IInd method : 1s1 2s1 2p1

b) Slater rule

Ist method : effectve nuclear charge for 2s electron

= 3 - (2 x 0.85) = 1.3

IInd method : effective nucelar charge for 2p electron

= 3 - (1 x 0.35 + 1 x 0.85) = 1.8

So the Ist method orbital electronic configuration is preferred by energy constraints by slater rule.

11) The wave function of a many-electron closed-shell atom can be expressed as a Slater determinant. A useful property of determinants is that interchanging any two rows or columns changes their sign and therefore that if any two rows or columns are identical, then the determinant vanishes. Use this property to show that (a) no two electrons can occupy the same orbital with the same spin.
