Large amount of biological diversity protect an ecosystem from environmental damage because in large biological diversity the food webs and ecological interactions in living organisms are more complex and diverse.

So in this ecosystems, if there is environmental changes then it can be easily compensated for the large amount of available resources, food and many other survival options.

But In ecosystems with less biodiverse ecosystems are at risk of suffering serious biological harm if subject to even small changes because individuals are dependent on less organisms that serve as food and also interaction with a small number of different species are there.

So in this ecosystems, abiotic factors ( non living ) are restrictive and species are more specialized for these conditions therefore more sensitive to environmental changes. So, even small environmental damage can cause serious biological harm....
