diffusion: diffusion is the net movement of particles(atoms
,ions, molecules, ) from a region of higher concentration to a
region of lower concentration.
it continues until the concentration of substances is uniform
throughout.
factors that affect rate of diffusion:
- mass of the molecule: lighter molecules move more faster than
heavier molecules.
- area and thickness of the membrane: area of the membrane
increases ,rate of diffusion also increases.......increasing
thickness slows the diffusion rate...
- temperature: temperature increases as this increases the random
collision between molecules and increases diffusion rate.
- distance of solute path : shorter paths of travel imply faster
rates of molecular diffusion .
- solvent properties: viscosity and density greatly effect
diffusion...if the medium has very viscous and dense in the
particles harder time to diffusing through it, so the rate of
diffusion will be slow...... if the medium is less dense and
viscous ,than the particles will move quickly and will diffuse
faster,so the rate of diffusion is fast.
