An experiment on tethered mine motions is to be conducted in fresh water in a wave tank. The mine is a sphere of 5cm diameter made of polystyrene (weight assumed negligible). The anchoring block is a lead cube of side length 5cm. The specific gravity of lead is 14.0. If the mine is joined to the lead cube by a light chord such that it floats completely submerged just below the free surface, determine:

a) the tension in the chord

b) the reaction force between the lead cube and the bottom of the tank.

For some reason people care about how acidic fresh water is. Two researchers conducted a study of 15 mountain lakes in the Southern Alps; any lake that has a pH greater than 6 would be classfied as "non-acidic." Below is a table of the pH levels from the 15 lakes the researchers surveyed: pH values of 15 Alpine Lakes 7.2 7.3 5.7 7.3 6.3 6.9 6.1 5.5 6.7 6.9 6.3 7.9 6.6 6.5 5.8 The standard deviation of the sample...

An experiment to determine compound partitioning among air, water and solid phases was conducted by adding 1 gram of the compound to a reactor that had 1 m3 of air, 10- 3 m3 of water, and 100 g of solid. The reactor was at atmospheric pressure and at a constant temperature of 20C. The compound has a molecular weight of 100 g/mole. Once equilibrium is reached, the air has a mass concentration of 0.500 g/m3 , and the water has...

What percentage of the earth’s water is fresh water? Why is it such a big problem to be cycling massive and growing volumes of grains and oil- seeds through livestock? What are overrides? Use examples from the chapter. Why are antibiotics used in animal feed, and why is this problematic? Fundamental imbalances in the distribution of the world’s food supply is caused by cycling humanly edible grains and oilseeds through animals to produce flesh, eggs, and milk, destroying much more...

A wave of water behaves like a plane wave with a frequency of 12 Hz breaks as it passes a sharp barrier between deep and shallow water. The velocity of the wave's propagation in the deep water is 24 cm/s, the angle of the wave reaching the barrier is 60o and the breaking wave angle at the barrier is 40o. a. What is the velocity of propagation of the wave in shallow water? b. What is the wavelength in the...
