Expert Solution

The two components from J.B. Miner's six composites for motivation to manage, that I think will motivate an individual to manage are-

1. Maintaining good relationships with authority figures-

Maintaining good relationship here means to be courteous, respectful and be in good terms with the authority or the promoters of the company. Being in good terms motivated the individual to maintain a professional standard before the authority and present himself/herself in a way to impress the authority. The individual will also get the same response from the authority which he/she delivers. The good relationship with the top level people will surely motivate the individual to make himself noticeable and be in a managerial position like the top level authority. He/She will try harder with extreme carefulness to secure a good position in the company and will not get encouraged to do unethical things. He/She will think better of the company and will want to succeed in whatsoever way possible and hence the individual will get motivated to manage the company or its workers.

2. Wanting to compete for recognition and advancement-

An individual who always think about climbing the ladder will succeed in the company. This is a very important component which talks about competitiveness or the zeal for advancement and recognition. An individual having this as a trait will never think of quitting the company and work hard to get promoted. The individual's hunger for recognition and advancement will make him different from others and as a result will motivate him/her to be a manager and manage the subordinates. The individual with this quality will wish to succeed and become one of the partner in the company. Thus, I agree with J.B. Miner's component for motivation to manage.

Among the six composites, I disagree with one, i.e. -

Being willing to do routine administrative tasks-

A manager is one who is responsible for controlling and administering staffs in an organisation in many ways. A manager's work cannot be the same everyday. A manager needs to be innovative and should have amazing on spot skills to tackle different scenarios that may arise in the company. A person who is willing to do routine administrative task can be a manager but will not be able to succeed and be unique in his/her job. No doubt that a manager should be able to do administrative task but should not be fixed to a routine. He/she should always try new ways to find solution to the problems. Therefore, according to me, being willing to do routine administrative task is not enough for one to be motivated to manage an organisation.
