Who was Ralph Nader?

A lawyer by profession and known for the career in the area of consumer protection, he was very active in the politics in the latter days of his life his main motive of life was to protect the customers from the dangerous products, he believed a consumer has a right to get a good quality product, and better society and a clean environment. He once faced an issue when general motors hired a detective to know about his personal life and one day he was caught and then made a settlement worth $425000, this money which Nader got he made public-help groups and helped the society.

He has made many contributions in consumer protection let look at these:-

1- He publicly declared that the soft drinks which we drink have a very large amount of Sugar which could be harmful to us.
2-He also warned the American public about the health issues of the red-dyes which was used as the coloring substance and also of the added preservative which the manufacturer used in Hot Dogs.
3-He was also responsible for the safety norms and the safety measures which were added in the cars which were till then focused on the styles and the speed this helped the customer get a safer car in which there were a lot of safety measures than that of before.

All these activities in the Consumer Protection helped society get safer and more health-friendly products and these type of activities allowed the consumer to know their rights and the power which a consumer have if they are paying for the goods they are purchasing. All these activities lead to a safer society and in the future lead to a bill known as Consumer Bill of Rights.

What is the Consumer Bill of Rights?

The bill was introduced by John f.Kenedy in 1962 this was basically a bill to protect the consumers from companies and the products which leads to consumer harassment. This also allowed the customers gain more information about the products which he/she is buying.

6 type of Rights in Consumer Bill of Rights

  1. The Right to Be Safe
  2. The Right to choose Freely
  3. The Right to be Heard
  4. The Right to be Informed
  5. The Right to Education
  6. The Right to Service

Let us take an Example of Car to explain the above points:-

  1. According to the Consumer Bill of Rights, we have the complete right to get a safer car that suits and fits all the necessary safety standards and all the safety precautions which may harm me after purchasing the car.
  2. According to the Consumer Bill of Rights, we can purchase any car and that of any company the company or any individual cannot force us to purchase the car which they insist.
  3. According to the Consumer Bill of Rights, we have the complete right to log any complaint against the car which we have purchased also we have the right to make them aware of the concerns which may have regarding the product in order to serve us better.
  4. According to the Consumer Bill of Rights, we have the right to get all the information about the car which we are purchasing also the information should be provided by the company in order to get us the clear picture of the product as well as we have the right to get the correct information and the company cannot tell us wrong information
  5. According to the Consumer Bill of Rights, we have the right to get all the education which may require in the future in order to drive the car which we are purchasing so that we can handle the things accordingly.
  6. According to the Consumer Bill of Rights, we have the right to get after-sales service of the product which we have purchased this means a company cannot deny to give us the service once we have purchased the product.
