Household septic systems include a tank that collects sludge and a porous leaching field that receives clarified effluent. How is this similar to or different from municipal wastewater treatment plants?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Both septic and municipal wastewater treatment has similar properties and basically they have same function which collects the sludge and breakdown the dispose of waste effectively from the property.

Having know to this there is a slight notable difference between them. And these differences are primarily how they breakdown the sludge and dispose of the waste.

Let's see what the difference between septic tank and water waste treatment system.

There are four major dissimilarities in between them they are :

1.Breakdown Process:

In septic tank the waste is broken down through by a biological or Natural process. In this the waste water enters the tank the solids get into the bottom by the floats it will rise to the top to form a scum layer, In between this two layer a clear body of water forms that contains bacteria & chemicals.

In wastewater the waste is broken down through by a Mechanical process at which rotating disc's are used to clear the bacterial breakdown of the waste. In this process it produces a non-damaging effluent that releases without the need of the treatment for further.

Effluent :

In septic tank the effluent formed from the bacteria is 70% clean that will used for the treatment before it releases into the environment.

In wastewater the effluent formed from the bacteria is much more complex so the waste is 95% clean so and it is disposed directly into the environment by soak away.

3.Servicing:

In septic tank there is no need for the servicing system because it works on the natural system and utilizes the forces of gravity to carry out the function.

In wastewater system there is a mechanical system to do requires the regular service to work effectively and keep them in a good condition.

Emptying:

The septic tank gets emptying after the prolonged usage of solids in the bottom. It gets emptied once in a year.

The waste water management system Emptying less oftenly as the aerobic bacteria breakdown the solids much faster and blockages are less of an issue.
