  • Even though kohn's says that rewards are not the best in improving behaviours and performances but in the long run without any incentive or motivation nobody can work especially in a job. Just by providing extrinsic motivation is not enought and some sought of monetary reward is definitely needed for better performance. Incentive programs cannot be entirely eliminated from the workplace especially in todays time where people are only after money to make their ends meet since the economic conditions globally are getting worse. Pay related performance rewards are working the best currently.
  • Moreover, these programs are helpful in encouraging competition among the workers which is helpful to be efficient in the long run and not loose out on the job. Eliminating them is no solution but some modifications can be done depending upon the oragnization's culture and employee needs. And,yes people are not just motivated by incentives and bonuses but they need to find their jobs exciting as well. A well balanced combination of both is needed. For some people, personal recognition can be more motivational than money and for some money could be important.
  • Yes,in the long run money is not the motivator any more and organizations need to keep creating an environment wherein, work becomes more challenging and interesting but incentive programs should not be entirely eliminated as it does have its short term positive effects on employees especially when they are new to motivate them and make them stay longer in the company. In reality, it takes real talent and courage to create a workplace in which employees feel important, where their work matters to them, and where they care about each other-with or without an incentive program.
