Expert Solution

The piece of art work known as Skull, was created in 1981 by Basquiat when we was merely twenty years old. Even though there are eyes, nose and teeth, the painting gives the illusion of an incomplete face.At first glance, this piece seems easy to understand ,however the meaning is obscured. Is it simply stating the incoherence of the artist's identity or does it show his unique perception of society? Basquiat provided no clear answers to the question why he painted this incomplete illusion and what the piece truly means.

At the age of 7, Basquiat was met with an accident and while recovering his mother gave him a copy of Gray's Anatomy, the famous medical book. The artist was fascinated by the complex internal construction of the human body, in contrast to its mundane outward appearance. In skull ,the artist fascination with the juxtaposition of the interior against the exterior is clear. The piece seems to breaking the barriers of the external and revealing the internal physiology of the sensory organs. But some people have also argued that the piece was influenced by the pressure of becoming commercially successful, which does not seems to hold true.

Perception of the individual elements in this piece of art is totally obscured. The master piece is painted with what can be described as calculated incoherence , the Basquiat trademark.
