Comparing biotransformation pathway, why is 1,1,2-trichloroethane more toxic than 1,1,1-trichloroethane? Note PEL for 1,1,1-trichloroethane is 350 ppm while PEL for 1,1,2-trichloroethane is 10 ppm.

Solutions

Expert Solution

PEL is permissible exposure limit.

1,1,2 trichloroethane has got only very low quantity permissible for exposure as compared to 1,1,1 trichloroethane.

Both are isomers.

1,1,1 trichloroethane is called methyl chloroform. Its non polar.

Both are good organic solvents.

Low molecular weight chlorinated hydrocarbons are toxic.

But difference of the 2 structural isomers are 1,1,1 trichloroethane is very unstable.

Studies in experimental animals show that, 1,1,1 trichloroethane is not retained in body for long time. 1,1,1 trichloroethane is easily converted to chlorine.

This instability in structure makes 1,1,1 trichloroethane less toxic.
