Describe the differences between a ramp and a stage/step exercise test to exhaustion. What are the pros and cons for each??
The ramp protocol utilizes gradual increase in work rate. It
incorporates gradual increase in grades of ramp steepness and
maximally stressing the O2 transport.
The gradual increase in work makes the muscles switch from
anaerobic to aerobic pathway for metabolism. This results in
delayed onset of fatigue and exhaustion.
Pros of ramp test : even pacing is not a problem as it is a
incremental test.
does not overstress body
Cons : require more equipments
load increment and determining maximal oxygen capacity do not
have a set protocol.
The step tests incorporates constant work rate. It causes the
patient to work continuously at a constant rate. This causes the
body to depend on anaerobic pathway for metabolism. This makes the
patient to fatigue at a faster rate.
Pros : easy to perform, low cost and does not require too many
instruments
Cons : even pacing on steps can be hard to achieve
people with coordination problems may not be able to perform the
test.
stress out body too much
