2. The participant was measuring his VO2max on a typical running machine. His weight is 64.7kg. Peak measures are: VO2max(67ml/kg/min). And the highest VO2 is 4.3L/min. Calculate the subject’s absolute and relative O2max scores
bsolute VO2 reflects the total (absolute) amount of oxygen consumed by a body, regardless of size, age or gender whereas relative VO2 indicates that score corrected to some reference, which happens to be a unit of mass or one kilogram (1 kg.). The units of measurement are all metric:
= 4.3L/min
Relative VO2 =Absolute VO2 *1000/Weight of the person
4.3L/min *1000/64.7 = 66.4ml /min /kg
Both absolute and relative VO2 provide valuable information. Considering the role of oxygen in metabolism (i.e., to burn fuels) quantifying the total amount of oxygen consumed provides an estimate of calories expended.
