In two-party system, a country's government dominate by the two political parties. The party which holds majority will govern the country and the party is known as majority or Governing Party the other is minority or Opposition Party.

The political party system in U.S is the two party system. Mainly two political parties that rules the US government are Democratic Party and the Republican Party. In every US presidential election any of these two parties have won since 1852.

The political system of today's US is originated at 1790s. This was established because of the arguments of two-distinct political groups named as Federalists and Anti-Federalists. Over 3 - main issues they having disaggrements : the nature of government, the economy and foreign policy. This lead to emergence of two-party system in US.

The major advantages of two-party system in US are:

  • Stability : The two parties are more stable than multi party political system.
  • Modulation :The two parties tend to be moderate because, they appeal to middle to win elections.
  • Ease : The voters will not have more confusion or difficulties in taking decision. So it is easy to elect a political party.

The 2-party system also having some disadvantages. Because may be they will sacrifice individually, political parties prioritise themselves, they may encourage polarization, etc.
