There is discussion about the various performance of two production machines. The quality control team finds that there is much variation in the output of two machines. This situation affects the reputation of the company, so the senior management would like to confirm whether the variation substantially exists or not.

As the Quality Manager of the company, you have to check and confirm whether the performance of these two production machines has any variation.

You are required to:

(a) Suggest and explain which statistical method(s) can help to prove any variation of performance between two production machines.

(b) Use a mathematical example to support your suggestion in (a).

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer A.
And statistical method which can help to prove variation of performance between two production machines is mean. It is also called as average. In this method the sum of list of all the numbers divided by the number of items on the list in order to gain the mean of the the output. When the two machines are giving different output in terms of variation the mean of each of the Machines can be calculated and compared with each other in order to prove this difference.

Answer B.
A mathematical example can be for example the two machines can be named as A and B. The machine A is giving output in terms of weight of the end product 10 kgs, similarly the output of machine B is giving the weight as 15 kgs, so the difference can be clearly seen in terms of the weight of output of both the Machines A and B.
In simple terms the idea behind this method is to simply calculate the weight of the end product of both the Machines and compare it with each other in order to find out the variation in output.

As a quality control engineer, you’re examining the performance of two of the suppliers (A and B) of a key sub-assembly in a system that your factory produces. You purchased a total of 387 batches of parts from Supplier A and 283 batches from Supplier B. When batches arrive, you inspect them to determine if they meet quality standards: batches either “meet” or “fail to meet” standards. The past quality data that you’ve collected appears below. a. From Supplier A,...

The quality-control inspector of a production plant will reject a batch of syringes if two or more defective syringes are found in a random sample of nine syringes taken from the batch. Suppose the batch contains 1% defective syringes. (a) Make a histogram showing the probabilities of r = 0, 1, 2, 3, , 8 and 9 defective syringes in a random sample of nine syringes. (b) Find μ.
