Solutions

Expert Solution

an atom or ion whic posses unpaired electrons causes paramagnetism. By lookin at s-,p-, d-filling status we can predict whether an atom or ion will posses para or dia or ferro magnetism. a negative charge means additional electrons to elemental atom and a positive charge means that much electrons have been removed.

S Electron configuration: [Ne] 3s23p4 in p-sub shell 1 unpaired electron present - so it is paramagnetic.

Ar- Electron configuration: [Ne] 3s23p64s1 in s-sub shell 1 unpaired electron present - so it is paramagnetic.

S2- Electron configuration: [Ne] 3s23p6 there is no unpaired electron present - so it is diamagnetic.

Ar Electron configuration: [Ne] 3s23p6 there is no unpaired electron present - so it is diamagnetic.

Na+ [Ne] 3s0 there is no unpaired electron present - so it is diamagnetic.

Answer: S and Ar- are paramagnetic only.
