An organic chemistrystudent had made the mistake of stopping the reaction before it was complete and ended up with a mixture ofbenzaldehyde and cinnamic acid. Purify the cinnamic acid. Benzaldehyde is a liquid, whereas cinnamic acid is solid. Hence, the mixture of benzaldehyde and cinnamic acid can be purified by recrystallization and the maximum amount of cinnamic acid can be recovered in 3 crops of the crystallization, as shown below.

Benzaldehyde + cinnamic acid Cinnamic acid (Major part) + mother liquor-1

Note: Mother liquor-1 = cinnamic acid (remaining after the first crop of crystallization) + benzaldehyde

Mother liquor-1 Cinnamic acid (major part remaining in first crop) + Mother liquor-2

Note: Mother liquor-2 = cinnamic acid (remaining after second crop of crystallization) + benzaldehyde

Mother liquor-2 Cinnamic acid (Almost all) + Mother liquor-3

Note: Mother liquor-3 = cinnamic acid (trace amount) + benzaldehyde

The purity of the cinnamic acid obtained in first crop of recrystallization will be highly (99.99%) pure.
