Question 10

Part A

Which molecule or compound below contains a pure covalent bond?

SCl6
Li2CO3
PF3
NaCl
Cl2

Solutions

Expert Solution

Covalent bond is formed from sharing of electrons. Sharing of electrons are possible when there is no significance difference in electronegavity difference the two atoms. If the difference in electronegativity between two atoms participarting in the bond is less than 1.8, they form covalent compound. If it is more ionic bond is formed.

So accordingly, NaCl is ionic, PF3 is ionic ( Cl and F are most electronegative, while Na is most electropositive )

for the same reason, Li2CO3 is also ionic.

hence Cl2 is the covalent compound. SCl6 is also covalent.

In chlorine for example, molecule involved is chlorine and it forms covalent bond.

Question 21 What is the fundamental difference between covalent and ionic bonding? In a covalent bond, the partners share a pair of electrons; in an ionic bond, one partner accepts electrons from the other. Covalent bonds form between atoms of the same element; ionic bonds form between atoms of different elements. Covalent bonding involves only the outermost electron shell; ionic bonding also involves the next electron shell inside the outermost shell. In covalent bonding, both partners end up with filled...

Polly Ester has synthesized a new compound, ML3. Elemental analysis confirms that the molecule contains one central atom, M, with three atoms, L's, attached to the central atom. Polly has postulated three possible 3-coordinate structures for the molecule with point groups D3H, C2V and C3V. Polly then records the IR and Ramen specta of the molecule and finds three M-L stretches in both the IR and Ramen spectra, with each IR and Ramen band being coincident ( bands occur at...
