Analyze the soccer kick. For each phase of the skill include:

  • Range of motion needed to perform task at each joint.
  • Movement and plane of motion at each joint.
  • Muscles acting as agonists, antagonists, and stabilizers at each joint and type of muscle contraction.
  • What may happen if any of the major muscles are weak or are not contracting correctly?

Phases of soccer kick are- The Approach

SwingLimb Loading

HipFlexion and Knee Extension

Foot Contact

FollowThrough

Muscles involved in soccer kick are mainly lower limb muscles like hip flexors, hip extensors( hamstrings) ,gluteus group of muscles, calf muscles ,muscles of ankle and core muscles as well.

Phase 1 approach phase- angle is created to kick a ball.

Phase 2- done in saggital plane. Movements are knee extension and planter flexion followed by dorsi flexion. Muscles are - quadriceps and tibialis posterior and tibialis anterior.

Phase 3- planter flexion+ knee flexion and knee extension as well + hip extension and slight hip abduction is done. It is a powerful hit stage.

Range of motion hip at 145° and knee at 105° and the type of contraction in hip and knee are concentric. Muscles are ilopsoas, rectus femoris, biceps femoris, sartorius

Hip and knee both work in agonist pattern.

Phase 4- planter flexion+ hip flexion and knee extension.

Hip range is at 157° and knee at 127° .both hip and knee undergo concentric contraction and both are agonist.

Muscles are ilopsoas, rectus femoris, hamstring, adductor brevis, tibia tib anterior and tibialis posterior.

Shorter moment arm is needed in this phase to high the velocity.

Phase 5- knee extension + planter flexion is done .

Phase 6- hip flexion+ knee extension and foot is relaxed in planter flexion.

Muscles are psoas major, rectus femoris ,biceps femoris ,sartorius, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis.

If muscles do not contract properly, then the kick would be of less power and of no strength.
