What is the purpose of Conservation of linear momentum experiment?
What is the theory of Conservation of linear momentum experiment? Write a paragraph on elastic and inelastic collision. Include related equations as well
Solution) Conservation of linear momentum
Momentum p of an object is the product of its mass and it's velocity
p=mv
The law of conservation of momentum states that the total momentum of all bodies within an isolated system is constant .
Theory of conservation of momentum arises in collisions where we can calculate speed of objects after collision
By applying law of conservation of momentum
pf = pi
Here pf is final momentum and pi is initial momentum .
Elastic collision
In this type of collision both kinetic energy and momentum are conserved after collision
If m1 and m2 objects moving with velocities u1 and u2 respectively then after collision
By applying law of conservation of momentum
m1u1 + m2u2 = m1v1 + m2v2
Here v1 and v2 are final velocities after collision
Similarly kinetic energy before and after collision can be equated
(1/2)m1u1^2 + (1/2)m2u2^2 = (1/2)m1v1^2 + (1/2)m2v2^2
Thereby we can get individual final velocities after collision
Inelastic collision
Here only momentum is conserved but not kinetic energy
If m1 and m2 masses objects moving with velocities u1 and u2 respectively collide together then usually they stick together and move with same final velocity
So by applying law of conservation of momentum
m1u1 + m2u2 = (m1+m2)V
Here V is final velocity with which they move .
