How can a manager determine whether his or her firm needs improvement in control? If improve- ment is needed, how can the manager tell what type of control needs improvement (operations, financial, structural, or strategic)? Describe some steps a manager can take to improve each of these types of control. 6. Identify characteristics of effective control, why people resist control, and how managers can overcome this resistance. • One way to increase the effectiveness of control is to fully integrate planning and control. • The control system should also be as flexible, accurate, timely, and objective as possible. • Employees may resist organizational controls because of overcontrol, inappropriate focus, rewards for inefficiency, and a desire to avoid accountability. • Managers can overcome this resistance by improving the effectiveness of controls and by allowing employee participation and developing verification procedures. 2. One company uses strict performance standards. Another has standards that are more flexible. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each system? 3. Are the differences in bureaucratic control and decentralized control related to differences in orga- nization structure? If so, how? If not, why not? (The terms do sound similar to those used to dis- cuss the organizing process.) 4. Many organizations today are involving lower- level employees in control. Give at least two exam- ples of specific actions that a lower-level worker could do to help his or her organization better adapt to environmental change. Then do the same for limiting the accumulation of error, cop- ing with organizational complexity, and minimiz- ing costs. 5. Describe ways that the top management team, midlevel managers, and operating employees can participate in each step of the control process. Do all participate equally in each step, or are some steps better suited for personnel at one level? Explain your answer.
As per policy, I have answered one question.
Answer:- Managers can determine in several ways if a firm needs improvements, such as:-
1) A decrease in productivity is a sign of needing improvement.
2) Any negative change in customer experience should be monitored and control
3) Higher costs and waste of other resources.
4) Any small error should be detected and solved before it causes a serious problem in the future.
5) Lack of managerial capability in difficult and complex situations.
Type of control that needs improvement are:-
1) Operational control deals with day to day activities so controlling this helps to improve the functioning of a business by reducing costs, errors, and being able to transform the resources into products or services.
2) Strategic control handled by the top-level like CEO and provides the overall direction to the company.
3) Financial control through the proper budget and financial statements helps to control the waste of resources.
4) Structural control is needed when different components of an organization have difficulty to achieve the organizational goals. Thus help in coordination between all the staff members.
Some steps taken by a manager to improve the control process are:-
1) Firstly, he has to establish a performance standard. The performance standard must be in the form of goals like revenue generated from sales and must be clear and realistic.
2)Secondly, The actual performance is measured to understand the quality and quantity of output.
3) Actual performance is then compared with the standard to determine if the standards are giving a positive or negative response.
4) Finally, after analyzing why standards are not met then the manager can create a solution that can meet the standard.
