From the information in this chapter on the mass of the proton, the mass of the electron, and the sizes of the nucleus and the atom, calculate the densities of a hydrogen nucleus and a hydrogen atom. (Radius of hydrogen atom is 1 ✕ 10-8 cm.)
density of hydrogen nucleus

______g/cm3

ddensity of hydrogen atom

___________g/cm3

Solutions

Expert Solution

A hydrogen nucleus is a proton and the mass of a proton is 1.67*10^-24g

Radius of hydrogen atom is 1 ✕ 10-8 cm

volume = 4/3r^3

             = 4/3*3.14*(10^-8)^3    = 4.186*10^-24cm^3

density of nucleus   = mass/volume

                                 = 1.67*10^-24g/ 4.186*10^-24cm^3    = 0.398g/cm^3

A hydrogen nucleus is a proton and the mass of a proton is   = 1.67*10^-24g + electrons = 1.67*10^-24g

Radius of hydrogen atom is 1 ✕ 10-8 cm

volume = 4/3r^3

             = 4/3*3.14*(10^-8)^3    = 4.186*10^-24cm^3

density of hydrogen = mass/volume

                                 = 1.67*10^-24g/ 4.186*10^-24cm^3    = 0.398g/cm^3

37.52•• Quarks and gluons are fundamental particles that will be discussed in Chapter 44. A proton, which is a bound state of two up quarks and a down quark, has a rest mass of m_p=1.67×10^−27 kg. This is significantly greater than the sum of the rest mass of the up quarks, which is m_u=4.12×10^−30 kg each, and the rest mass of the down quark, which is m_d=8.59×10^−30 kg.
