Epidemiologists decided to investigate the validity of new diagnostic tool for breast cancer. They used this new diagnostic tool for breast cancer in 150 women with biopsy-proven breast cancer in 300 age- and race-matched control women. The results of the new tool were positive in 136 cases and in 35 control women, all of whom showed no evidence of cancer at biopsy. What is the sensitivity of new diagnosis tool for breast cancer?

a. 33%
b. 91%
c. 9%
d. 12%
e. 88%

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer B - 91%

My calculation is 90.6% since its approximate 91% ,chose option b.

The true positive cases are the ones which had positive biospy result and positive screening test result.

False positive cases are the ones with negative biopsy result and positive screening test result.

False negative cases are the ones with positive biopsy result and negative screening test result . So it will be 150-136 .

True negative cases are the ones with both screening and biopsy as negative

So control group 300- 35 .

if this helps please give it a positive rating thank you!

Epidemiologists claim that the probability of breast cancer among Caucasian women in their mid-60s is 0.003. An established test identified people who had breast cancer and those that were healthy. A new mammography test in clinical trials has a probability of 0.90 for detecting cancer correctly. In women without breast cancer, it has a chance of 0.975 for a negative result. If a 65-year-old Caucasian woman tests positive for breast cancer, what is the probability that she, in fact, has...

A method currently used by doctors to screen women for possible breast cancer fails to detect cancer in 20% of the women who actually have the disease. A new method has been developed that researchers hope will be able to detect cancer more accurately. A random sample of 81 women known to have breast cancer were screened using the new method. Of these, the new method failed to detect cancer in 14. Let p be the true proportion of women...

A new medical imaging device is designed and made for screening of breast cancer. Describe how experiments can be performed and used to determine the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the device. Using your own hypothetical values, calculate the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the device. Is the device suitable for screening for breast cancer, based on your calculated values of its accuracy, sensitivity and specificity? Explain.
