Explain how plant and animal cells respond differently to hypotonic/hypertonic solutions (I.e. turgidity/plasmolysis vs swelling and lysing vs shrinking (cremation)
Ans.Many molecules in and around cells exist in concentration gradients across the cell membrance.meaning that the molecules are not always evenly distributed inside and outside of the cells.
Hypotonic solutions;-The hypotonic solution has lower solute concentration than the cell does.As aresult it also has higer concentration of water than the cell does.osmosis draws water out of the solution and into the cells.as a result ,plants and animals cells both appear more plump when placed in hypotonic solutions.
Hypertonis solutions;-The hypertonis solution has higher solute concentration than the cell does.As aresult it also has lower concentration of water than the cell does.cell membranes and plants cell walls are semipermeable barriers, which means that certain molecules can diffuse through them, while other molecules can not. many solutes are too large or charged to cross the cell membrane but water can diffuse freely.in hypertonic environment, osmosis forces water out of the cell.
